ASHLAND WINS STATE SCHOLARS BOWL COMPETITION

By glory asih

February 19, 2008

The Ashland High School Scholars' Bowl team is the 2007-2008 1-A State
Champion, winning first at the state tournament hosted by Southern Coffee
County High School in LeRoy on Saturday, February 9, 2008.

Competing for Ashland in both tournaments were seniors Bethany Spare and CJ
Pearce, and juniors Grant Gardiner and Adam York, and alternate, senior
Megan Cunningham. The team is coached by Leanne Pike. They received a
large trophy and medals at the awards ceremony at the end of the tournament.

The 16 teams that qualified for the State tournament by taking first or
second place in their Regional tournaments were Ashland, Downs-Lakeside,
Goessel, Leavenworth-Immaculata, Madison, Rexford-Golden Plains, Rolla,
Scandia-Pike Valley, Agra-Eastern Heights, Hutchinson Central Christian,
Colony-Crest, Axtell, Montezuma-South Gray, Pratt-Skyline, Tribune-Greeley
County, and Wetmore.

In pool play Ashland defeated Downs 40-15, Madison 50-30, Golden Plains
70-15, Goessel 60-50, Immaculata 40-10, and Pike Valley 85-20. They lost
one round to Rolla 50-60.

The three teams advancing to the championship from Pool A were Ashland and
Immaculata with one loss each, and Rolla with two. Advancing from Pool B
were Tribune, Pratt-Skyline, and Central Christian.

In the round robin championship in which each team plays each of the other
teams, Ashland defeated Immaculata 60-40, Tribune, 45-30, Skyline 50-30, and
Central Christian 35-20. They again lost one round to Rolla 25-40, but were
the only team to have just one loss, so were declared Champions. Both
Immaculata and Rolla had two losses, but since Immaculata defeated Rolla in
the championship round, they were awarded the second place trophy, and Rolla
took third. Tribune came in fourth, Central Christian, fifth, and Skyline,
sixth.

Ashland qualified for State at the Regional tournament they hosted on
Monday, February 4, 2008, which had been postponed from January 31 because
five of the twelve teams assigned to the Regional were unable to attend due
to bad weather conditions.

After pool play the top three teams from each pool advanced to the
championship. Advancing from Pool A were Pratt-Skyline, Stafford, and
Macksville. From Pool B were Ashland, Bucklin, and Cunningham. Ashland won
four rounds, and lost one to Bucklin. Since they were the only team with
one loss, they captured first place and advanced to state.

Bucklin, Pratt-Skyline, and Stafford each had two losses, so tie breaking
rules were applied to determine that Pratt-Skyline was in second place, also
advancing to the state tournament. Stafford came in third, Bucklin fourth,
Cunningham fifth, and Macksville, sixth.
